Brice Paey Profile

  1. justin- awesome job! I thought that all the audio and video editing was just great! I especially loved the start of the video with the introduction to the types of track as well as the gun going off. I thought that was a unique way to start your story off. Not much else to say it looked really professional and all of your edits were smooth and seamless.

  2. Great Job!

You gave a very detailed account of this amazing athlete and his amazing skill. However, if you were going to change anything I might take out some of the generic track stuff in the beginning and dig right into Brice. Other than that nice job!

I really like how you started this video, it reads more like a news reel at first. This is a wonderful profile and it was technically well done. You also got some wonderful shots that fits together.

  4. Hey Justin,

Really great profile on Brice, you covered everything from how he got involved with the shot put to breaking the record, a really complete story. I really liked the way you introduced the story with your narration and covering of all the elements of track and field. I liked your b-roll but I would have liked to have seen other things like Brice working out or some pictures of him in highschool when the principal was talking just to break up the interviews a little more. But your interviews were fantastic and you really told the story well.

  5. Some of the sound cut on a few of the transitions but most of the time it was fine. I would have liked to have seen a bit more b-roll during some interviews as I felt that the pacing wasn't constant. But I will say that the pacing/b-roll problem is nowhere near as major as your last cut, so that's good. The shots that you added really contribute to the story but some of them did seem to be a bit repetitive in the way they were shot. I would have liked to have heard more about Paey as a person too, if only a few details, to get a better sense of who he is outside the game. But great shooting and structuring of the story so it flows. Nice work!

  6. Hi Justin,

I think you did a really nice job on this video. You had excellent transitions and quotes from your interviews. The only suggestion I would make is to either continue your narration at the beginning throughout the piece or take it out altogether because its kind of inconsistent to just have it at the beginning. Besides that, this video was excellent and I think everyone can tell you must have worked really hard to arrive at the results. Great job!

  7. The transition as a story for this worked very well, especially ending on the "Olympic Dream" carried by all three ("best throw after college," "Olympic trials," and the "sky is the limit").

I'm pretty sure the audio matching video problems were the computer and not the actual file. I would check it on multiple computers to make sure.

One addition I would make is a graphic detailing the records he's held and/or broken.

  8. Justin:

Boost the volume of the gunshot and yelling at the beginning for a more dynamic beginning…add an echo? Is that even ethical?

I really like the interviews … smooth and professional. They are all very well-spoken and enthusiastic, which makes all the difference.

Inclusion of the high school guy is critical for giving us the backstory. I'd still like some archival snapshots from the family albums to go along with what he is saying.

I still don't get a sense of what it's like to do a sport like this. I wonder if that's something we want to get into a little more deeply.

"He truly, truly earned it" quote from the high school track coach and Bryce's own comment on nothing nicer than being outside on a nice day really help to establish him as a unique individual who is certainly worthy of a story.

I loved the quote that went something like: "I expect to break the record every time I go out.." Great interviews, obviously, and fine editing.

  9. Justin,

Great job on your final project! I think you made some really smart adjustments between your rough and final drafts on this profile.

The footage of Brice outside throwing and practicing with his coach were my favorite part of the project because we got to see him in action and get an idea of what life is like for someone at his level. Especially for viewers who don't know much about shotput, I thought these images and the images of the regulation shotput ball/throwing circle were important to include so good call on that. I also thought your narration was helpful for the project/ the audience. Personally I would have liked to see/hear more from Brice and a little less from the two coaches, but overall this is a high quality project with a great subject, great work!

  10. Nice job, Justin. This was really well done, and I can't really think of anything that needs to be completely adjusted or changed.
The broll was great; it was probably my favorite part of the video. It really put the reader into the subject. I don't know if this was intentional, but I thought it was a great idea to have the interviews in the field house. Showing the newspaper article was good to. The only thing that I'm a little unsure about is the intro with you narrating. It was very professional and it definitely gave us good info, but we never hear your voice again in the video. I feel like if you took it out if wouldn't make much of a difference on the over all impact of the project, but at the same time leaving it in wouldn't hurt it either.
    But again, really good job!

  11. Justin,
I thought you video came out really awesome! I wouldn't really change very much of it- however, I may be a little bias because I'm on the team. I really liked the opening to the video and I thought the narration was a really good idea to do. I guess my only comment about it would be that, while I know everything about track, others don't. I'm sure no one else really knows that the shot is 15 pounds, etc..

  12. Great work, Justin - this absolutely felt like something you'd see on a local news website. Your intro was engaging, and I liked the voiceover narration. Maybe you could have ended in a similar way, though - I felt it was too abrupt and needed a little more full-circle closure. Nice balance between A- and B-roll. The text introducing your interviewees was spot-on, too. It showed up right when I wanted to know who was speaking. Sometimes the transitions between speakers seemed off, like they were stepping on each other's words. An easy fix, though.
Are there other throwers on our team? It would have been cool to see some of their footage in relation to Brice's, or some interactions with the coach. I found myself wanting to watch him throw in very slow motion. What a strange sport...your piece really grabbed and kept my interest. Go 'cats!

  13. Justin, great job man! I think this video is definitely very well rounded regarding the amount of voices you have, video, audio, and still images. I enjoyed the pace and the collaboration of each media you used. Many people may know what 'PR' stands for, but it took me a minute to figure it out so just for future though to make sure abbreviations are said so if you have an audience that may be unfamiliar with sports there wont be any confusion. Not a huge deal- just a little thought. I would still like to have a visual of how far Brian is throwing in comparison to the regional average or some other benchmark. I am just so unfamiliar with this track and field event so by having a visual it will help. On that note the visual and description you had of the ball and throwing area was really good! I thought this was a great topic because I had no idea of this guy and he seems to be a pretty big deal. Thanks again and good job! :)

  14. Hey Justin,

For some reason, my comment didn't come through, so I'm posting again.

I really like the video, I thought that you did a great job interviewing and I really liked the inclusion of shots of Brice throwing. I thought that putting more visual elements on top of the background audio added a lot to the overall end result.

I thought that your interviews were very good, included a lot of humor, which was great. My favorite story is the high school coach's story about the Thomas Aquinas Football team thinking that they could throw a shotput ball.

The only thing that stood out to me as something to work on was the transitions in between the interviews. There were a lot of parts where the beginning of the audio was cut off and I think that some of the fade to black transitions could have been shortened.

    Overall, great work!
